Le tombe del IV miglio della via Appia Antica

Historic site · Ardeatino, Italy

A sequence of roadside tombs standing within about 400 metres of one another at the IV mile of the via Appia Antica, where the boundary leaves the road and both sides fall in this quartiere. The individually identifiable ones are the Mausoleo di Sant'Urbano martire, of the second century; the Tomba dei Licini; the Tomba del fregio dorico, an altar-tomb of the Sullan period; the Sepolcro di Hilarus Fuscus; the Tomba di Tiberio Claudio Secondino; a colombario; the Tomba di Quinto Apuleio; a rectangular tomb in the form of a small temple; the Tomba dei Rabiri, of the first century; a tower tomb with an arched doorway; the Tomba dei Festoni; and the Tomba del frontespizio.

History

The tombs stand on the open stretch of the road beyond via Cecilia Metella, in the part of the Appia that this quartiere holds on both sides. At the III mile, on the same road, is a marble high relief carrying a figure in heroic nudity.
