Area archeologica del Nuovo Mercato Testaccio

Beneath the Nuovo Mercato Testaccio, in the market's own words, years of excavation and restoration brought to light the remains of a very old horreum, a Roman storage warehouse, which still holds hundreds of amphorae and other finds. The site is managed by the Soprintendenza Speciale Archeologia Belle Arti e Paesaggio di Roma. It is reached through the market on open days announced by its traders, in visits led by the archaeologists who excavated it, lasting about forty-five minutes for groups of up to twenty, free, with an optional donation. The assembly point is at stall 63. The market states that visits are suspended while the spaces are refurbished.
