Baker Mountain
Ski area · Moscow, Maine
A volunteer-run community ski area on Pierce Hill in Moscow, operating a T-Bar and Poma surface lift since the 1960s.
History
According to New England Ski History's Baker Mountain page, the area's roots "likely date back to 1937 or 1938, when avid skiers Allen Quimby Jr. and Langdon Quimby logged the slopes of Pierce Hill," land they leased from Central Maine Power Company for their Allen Quimby Veneer Company. After a delayed start to the season, the rope tow debuted on January 28, 1940, with 150 skiers, 50 of them Farmington-Franklin County Ski Club members who had chartered buses. The non-profit Baker Mountain Ski Tow Club was formed in early 1959, with Gerard Guay elected president, William Melcher vice president, Arthur Gamache treasurer, and multiple Quimby family members on the board. In June 1967, the club began formalizing plans to replace the rope tow with an aerial lift; the expanded ski area debuted on January 11, 1969, with club membership at 118, and, separately, the new lift and lodge were dedicated on February 2, 1969, with Allen Quimby cutting the ceremonial ribbon. Per the same source, the Town of Moscow approved $800 for night skiing lights at its 1975 town meeting, and operations were bolstered in 1978-79 when the town provided two lift operators funded by the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act. Night skiing lights were installed again for the 1998-99 season, a $12,200 project funded by donations and a Maine Community Foundation grant. New England Ski History states the Baker Mountain Ski Tow Club "continues to operate Baker Mountain ski area to this day, thanks in large part to volunteers, grants, and donations," with the 2025-26 season running January 31 through March 8, 2026 ($20 weekend ticket, $150 season pass), and its status field reads "Status: Open," with a T-Bar/Poma surface lift and no standing chairlift. The Town of Moscow's own website states, "Moscow is home to Baker Mountain Ski Tow, one of the oldest ski areas in the state."
