Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum

The Bartow and Pell families alternately owned the property through 1888, when New York City acquired it for Pelham Bay Park. The International Garden Club leased the mansion from 1914 and had it restored by Delano & Aldrich in the 1910s; the firm designed a formal garden that was completed in 1916. The mansion interiors were refurbished with period objects under the direction of Joseph Downs, and the house opened as a historic house museum in May 1946.

It was designated a New York City Landmark on February 15, 1966, and its interior on May 27, 1975. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the "Bartow-Pell Mansion and Carriage House", at "Pelham Bay Park, Shore Rd.", on December 30, 1974, reference number 74001220, and designated a National Historic Landmark on December 8, 1976 — the date the National Historic Landmark roll carries.

The carriage house was built no later than 1842, three storeys of masonry; inside it were the stable hand's home, vehicular storage, and the hayloft. Wikipedia calls it the last remaining masonry carriage house in New York City that retains its original design, and the last remaining outbuilding on the Bartow–Pell Mansion's site. It was restored between 1987 and 1993 and reopened in 1993, in the museum's words, "restored to its original use as a working stable".

The mansion and garden are operated by the Bartow-Pell Conservancy, formerly the International Garden Club, which took its present name in 2008; the museum itself is operated by the Bartow Pell Landmark Fund, and New York City Parks owns the mansion. The name Pell was added in 1959, to a name that was then Bartow Mansion Museum and Gardens, to acknowledge the importance of the Pell family.
