Basilica di San Clemente al Laterano

Two superimposed churches standing over Republican-era Roman buildings and a Mithraeum. Roma Capitale says the first church was «eretta prima del 385» — raised before 385 — and places the basilica «circa 300 metri oltre il Colosseo», about 300 metres beyond the Colosseum.

History

The lower church was wrecked in the sack of 1084 by Robert Guiscard. The upper church was built in 1108 by Paschal II and restructured under Clement XI by Carlo Fontana, who made the Baroque facade and reused ancient granite columns in the arcaded portico. The bell tower is of the late seventeenth or early eighteenth century. The Mithraeum belongs to this site rather than standing as a separate one. The basilica is in Monti, and the neighbouring rione of Celio does not list it among its own monuments.
