Carew Manor Great Hall

The Grade I listing was made on 21 January 1954 as list entry 1065672, with the statutory address "Beddington Place (Great Hall only), Church Road", and it covers the great hall alone, not the surrounding building. It is the one Grade I entry inside the borough boundary, and the National Heritage List for England records fourteen further entries here at Grade II*. Two Domesday estates at Beddington were united by Nicholas Carew to form Carew Manor in 1381, and the Carews held it into the Tudor period. Four neighbouring structures carry their own entries and are not the great hall: Beddington Place (2 end wings), Grade II, NHLE 1357591; the orangery wall, Grade II, NHLE 1065673; the gates and wrought iron screen at the west entrance, Grade II, NHLE 1300597; and the garden walls north of the orangery walls, entered as "Carew Manor Special School", Grade II, NHLE 1200792.
