History

The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London established the garden in 1673. It is registered as a park and garden at Grade I, NHLE 1000147; three registered landscapes in the borough carry that grade, the other two being Brompton Cemetery, NHLE 1000248, and Kensal Green (All Souls) Cemetery, NHLE 1000817, which straddles the boundary with Hammersmith and Fulham. Inside the garden the gate piers and gates (Grade II, NHLE 1189594), the rockery in the north-eastern segment at the centre of the garden (Grade II, NHLE 1265508) and the marble statue of Sir Hans Sloane (Grade II, NHLE 1080712) are each listed separately.
