Kensington and Chelsea, London: the South Kensington museums, Chelsea's riverside and Portobello Road

Cromwell Road and Exhibition Road carry three national museums standing shoulder to shoulder. The Victoria and Albert Museum opens daily 10.00–17.45 and on Friday until 22.00, though some galleries close after 17.45 and the galleries begin clearing 30 minutes before closing; it closes 24–26 December and admission is free. It began as the Museum of Manufactures in 1852, and Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone of the present Aston Webb building in 1899. The building is listed at Grade I under the name 'VICTORIA AND ALBERT MUSEUM', NHLE 1190187, and the Cole Wing is a separate entry at Grade II*, NHLE 1080654. The collection holds over 2.8 million objects spanning more than 5,000 years of human creativity, and more than 1.25 million of them are searchable online.

The Natural History Museum, on the same road, opens daily 10:00–17:50 with last entry at 17:30 and closes on Friday 9 October 2026 for a charity gala and on 24–26 December. Admission is free and a free entry ticket can be booked to guarantee entry. It cares for more than 80 million objects spanning billions of years and welcomes more than seven million visitors a year. Its Grade I entry is named 'Natural History Museum, Front Lodge and Gates, Gatepiers and Railings', NHLE 1080675, so the front lodge and railings come with the building; a lodge west of the museum is a separate Grade II entry, NHLE 1190175.

The Science Museum on Exhibition Road opens daily 10.00–18.00 with last entry at 17:15 and closes 24–26 December, and general admission is free with a pre-booked ticket. The museum buildings carry no National Heritage List entry, though their neighbours do: the Royal College of Music at Grade II, NHLE 1265501, the Royal School of Mines at Grade II, NHLE 1227162, and Queen's Tower, the surviving campanile of the Imperial Institute, at Grade II, NHLE 1231643.

The Brompton Oratory, properly the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, stands immediately west of the Victoria and Albert Museum on the Brompton Road frontage, 184 metres from it. It is listed at Grade II under the name 'THE ORATORY', NHLE 1358123; the Oratory House, the block parallel to Brompton Road, is a separate Grade II entry, NHLE 1080763; and a cabmen's shelter in the centre of the road outside Oratory House is listed at Grade II, NHLE 1265389. No source states its opening hours, so none are given here.

King's Road and Sloane Square hold the inland edge of Chelsea, and Sloane Square Underground station is 39 metres from the Duke of York's Square frontage. The Duke of York's Headquarters building is listed at Grade II, NHLE 1266717, and the chapel to it is a separate Grade II entry, NHLE 1224627. The Saatchi Gallery occupies the building and opens Monday to Sunday, 10AM–6PM; it has presented contemporary art exhibitions showcasing the work of emerging artists since 1985, and in 2019 it became a registered charity.

Royal Hospital Road carries the riverside strip. The Royal Hospital Chelsea's main buildings, seven three-storey connected blocks, are listed at Grade I, NHLE 1226301, and the grounds and Ranelagh Gardens are separately registered as a park and garden at Grade II, NHLE 1000353, under the name 'ROYAL HOSPITAL, CHELSEA and RANELAGH GARDENS'. The statue of Charles II in the centre of the middle courtyard is Grade I, NHLE 1226477, and the entrance gates and lodges on the north-west side of Burton's Court, fronting St Leonard's Terrace, are Grade I, NHLE 1265915. The operator directs visitors to Chelsea Gate and names the Soane Stable Yard, an interactive exhibition, guided tours and the Wren Chapel among what a visitor sees. Chelsea Physic Garden at 66 Royal Hospital Road opens Sunday to Friday, 11am–5pm, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Tickets run £5–£15, the Glasshouses are included in the standard ticket, and guided tours run from 1 April until 31 October with their cost included in admission. The Worshipful Society of Apothecaries of London established the garden in 1673, and the operator describes four acres holding over 4,500 medicinal, edible and useful plants. It is registered as a park and garden at Grade I, NHLE 1000147; three registered landscapes in the borough carry that grade, the other two being Brompton Cemetery, NHLE 1000248, and Kensal Green (All Souls) Cemetery, NHLE 1000817, which straddles the boundary with Hammersmith and Fulham. Inside the garden the gate piers and gates (Grade II, NHLE 1189594), the rockery in the north-eastern segment at the centre of the garden (Grade II, NHLE 1265508) and the marble statue of Sir Hans Sloane (Grade II, NHLE 1080712) are each listed separately.

At the Fulham Road corner, Michelin House stands on the Chelsea side at number 81, 440 metres almost due south of the Brompton Oratory, and is listed at Grade II under the name 'MICHELIN HOUSE THE MAIN PART FACING THE FULHAM ROAD', NHLE 1080656. At the river, Chelsea Old Church on Old Church Street is listed at Grade I as 'CHELSEA OLD CHURCH (ALL SAINTS)', NHLE 1189649, and the statue of Thomas Carlyle in the Embankment Gardens nearby is Grade II, NHLE 1080715. Kensington Palace is inside the borough while Kensington Gardens around it lies in the City of Westminster, and the boundary runs between the two. The palace, on Palace Avenue, is listed at Grade I, NHLE 1223861. The Orangery stands beside Kensington Palace and is a separate Grade I entry, NHLE 1223783; the garden temple to the south of the palace is Grade II, NHLE 1223934; the old barrack block is Grade II, NHLE 1267049; and the entrance gates are Grade II, NHLE 1223784. Kensington Palace Gardens, the avenue running north from the palace, carries 17 separate entries on the National Heritage List, 14 at Grade II and three at Grade II*. Kensington Gardens itself is a Grade I registered park and garden, NHLE 1000340, in the City of Westminster. No source states the palace's opening hours, so none are given here.

The Design Museum has been at 224–238 Kensington High Street since 2016, in the former Commonwealth Institute, listed at Grade II* under that name, NHLE 1227441. Sir Terence Conran founded the museum in 1989; it was awarded European Museum of the Year in 2018 and Independent Research Organisation status in spring 2024. It opens 10:00–17:00 Monday to Thursday and 10:00–18:00 Friday to Sunday, and on bank holidays, closing on 18 September all day and reopening on 19 September 2026, and closing on 24, 25 and 26 December and reopening on 27 December 2026.

Behind the park runs the Victorian artists' quarter of Holland Park Road and Melbury Road. Leighton House at 12 Holland Park Road opens Wednesdays to Mondays, 10am–5:30pm, and is listed at Grade II*, NHLE 1191541. It stands 135 metres south of The Tower House on Melbury Road, which is listed at Grade I, NHLE 1225632. Five other entries on the National Heritage List are named exactly 'Leighton House' — 1040586, 1181392, 1263734, 1288894 and 1387676 — and none of them is this house.

Holland Park opens from 7.30am until dusk, with closing times displayed at all entrances, and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea operates it. It is registered as a park and garden at Grade II, NHLE 1000811. Holland House, the Jacobean mansion at the centre of the park, is listed at Grade I, NHLE 1267135, and the gate piers to its forecourt are a further Grade I entry, NHLE 1223780, standing 59 metres south of the house. The Kyoto Garden sits in the south-west of the park and was donated by the Chamber of Commerce of Kyoto in 1991, and Opera Holland Park operates in the park grounds. The roof garden at 99 Kensington High Street is separately registered at Grade II, NHLE 1001406.

Portobello Road runs north from the stucco terraces of the Ladbroke estate into Golborne Road, and the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea runs Portobello Road Market from a market office at 72 Tavistock Road. The market street carries no National Heritage List entry; the Ladbroke estate around it is registered as a park and garden at Grade II, NHLE 1000242, a designation covering the communal garden squares rather than the market street. Trellick Tower stands on the Cheltenham Estate at Golborne Road and is listed at Grade II* under the name 'TRELLICK TOWER CHELTENHAM ESTATE', NHLE 1246688. It is a residential block rather than a visitor attraction, and it is seen from the street; no single postcode covers the block, which is addressed simply to Golborne Road.

Kensal Green Cemetery stands on Harrow Road, and it straddles a boundary: its centre, the Anglican Chapel and the eastern part are in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, while the western and southern edges are in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The cemetery is registered as a park and garden at Grade I under the name 'KENSAL GREEN (ALL SOULS) CEMETERY', NHLE 1000817, and the Anglican Chapel within it is listed at Grade I, NHLE 1190995. The West Gate opens Monday to Saturday 9am–5pm, Sunday 10am–5pm and bank holidays 10am–1.30pm through Greenwich Mean Time, and Monday to Saturday 9am–6pm, Sunday 10am–6pm and bank holidays 10am–1.30pm through British Summer Time. The East Gate, for pedestrian access only, is locked at 4.30pm Monday to Sunday and at 1.00pm on bank holidays. The operator's address covers the whole 72-acre cemetery and crematorium.

The borough has no single interchange, and four areas take four different stations. For the museums, take the Circle, District or Piccadilly line to South Kensington, 212 metres from the Cromwell Road museums; Gloucester Road, on the same three lines, is 628 metres away. For Brompton Road and Knightsbridge, take the Piccadilly line to Knightsbridge station, 343 metres off, where buses 19, 22, 137, 452, C1, N19, N22 and N137 also stop. Hyde Park Corner, also on the Piccadilly line, is 858 metres from the same point.

For Chelsea, take the Circle or District line to Sloane Square, 39 metres from the Duke of York's Square frontage and 847 metres from the Royal Hospital and the Physic Garden. London Victoria, 871 metres from Sloane Square, is served by the Gatwick Express, Southeastern, Southern and Thameslink. The Royal Hospital's operator names Sloane Square as the nearest Underground station, Victoria as the nearest rail station, and bus 170 from Victoria and Roehampton as stopping right outside, with buses 11, 137, 211, 360 and 452 also serving it.

For Kensington Palace and the Design Museum, take the Circle or District line to High Street Kensington, 550 metres from the palace and 549 metres from the museum. Queensway, on the Central line, is 594 metres from the palace, and Notting Hill Gate, on the Central, Circle and District lines, is 725 metres from it. For Leighton House the nearest station is Kensington (Olympia), 487 metres away on the District line and 510 metres away for the Mildmay and Southern services, and that station itself sits in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham.

For Portobello, take the Circle or Hammersmith & City line to Ladbroke Grove, 406 metres from the middle of the market run; Westbourne Park, on the same two lines, is 344 metres from Trellick Tower and Ladbroke Grove is 721 metres from it. For the cemetery, Kensal Green station is 282 metres away and is served both by the Bakerloo line and by the Lioness Overground line. Holland Park station, on the Central line, is 701 metres from Notting Hill Gate.
