Church of St Mary the Virgin, Harefield

Medieval fabric survives, restored and altered in 1768 and again in 1841. The church holds the tomb of Alice Spencer, Dowager Countess of Derby, of the Spencers of Althorp, buried here in January 1637, and the Newdigate family, lords of the manor from about 1440, became patrons of the church and are commemorated inside it. The Grade I listing was made on 8 May 1950 as list entry 1358363, under the register name "CHURCH OF ST MARY". The Almshouses 296 m north-west are Grade II, NHLE 1358364, listed the same day, and Breakspear House about 750 m due east is Grade I, NHLE 1080262, with its Grade II dovecote, NHLE 1080263. There is no station at Harefield: Denham Rail Station, served by Chiltern Railways, is 2,166 m away over the Buckinghamshire boundary, and the 331 and U9 buses stop on St Mary's Road 208 m from the churchyard gate.
