Ghirardelli Square

A chocolate factory turned into a block of shops and restaurants around open courtyards, at 900 North Point Street. It is San Francisco Landmark No. 30, designated in 1970, and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on 29 April 1982 as Pioneer Woolen Mills and D. Ghirardelli Company, reference number 82002249.
History
Domenico Ghirardelli bought the whole city block in 1893 to make it the headquarters of the Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. In the early 1960s the Golden Grain Macaroni Company bought the business, moved the headquarters to San Leandro and put the block up for sale. William M. Roth and his mother, Lurline Matson Roth, bought the land in 1962; they hired the landscape architect Lawrence Halprin and the architects Wurster, Bernardi & Emmons, and the converted square opened in 1964. Benjamin Thompson and Associates reworked the lower floor of the Clock Tower in 1965 for a Design Research store.
