Fontana di Pio IX in piazza Mastai

Historic site · Trastevere, Italy

The fountain that ornaments the semicircular piazza laid out in front of the former papal tobacco factory. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina's page for it states Rione: Trastevere.

History

Roma Capitale records that it was built in 1865 by the architect Andrea Busiri Vici (1817-1911), as the ornament of the semicircular piazza before the Manifattura dei Tabacchi and the pivot of the Quartiere Mastai that Busiri Vici designed for Pius IX Mastai-Ferretti. It has octagonal steps and an octagonal basin, papal arms alternating with cartouches, four dolphins under the lower basin and four putti under the upper. It was restored in 1996.
