Mausoleo Ossario Garibaldino

Roma Capitale records that it stands where the last defence of the Roman Republic was fought, from 30 April to early July 1849; that Giovanni Jacobucci (1895-1970) designed it and it was inaugurated on 3 November 1941 after two years' work; that it holds the remains of the fallen in the battles for Rome of 1849-1870; that Ezio Garibaldi promoted it in the 1930s and the Uffici Tecnici del Governatorato built it. It is a travertine quadriportico with three round arches to a side and a central ara cut from a single block of red Baveno granite. Roma Capitale records that the sacrarium's thirty-six loculi carry memorial slabs naming more than 1,600 of the fallen, but that the loculi hold only about two hundred sets of remains, mostly anonymous, recovered in successive searches, and that the porphyry sarcophagus on the end wall holds Goffredo Mameli, the young Genoese poet and author of Italy's anthem, mortally wounded on the Janiculum in 1849 at twenty-two.
