Fontane sarcofago di piazza del Popolo

The Sovrintendenza records them as part of Valadier's furnishing of the square between 1814 and 1828, replacing a drinking trough and a wash-house that until the eighteenth century had given the place a rural character. Valadier designed the sacristy and the whole convent flank of Santa Maria del Popolo, and the Giacomo Acqua barracks opposite, formerly the papal guards', as well. The strigilated sarcophagus by the church carries a portrait of a married couple in a clipeus and dates to the middle of the third century AD; the other, with a single togate male figure, to the last quarter of the same century.
