Golden Gate Park Stables

Attraction · Golden Gate Park, California

A quadrangle of stables around a central riding ring, the buildings concrete with gabled clay tile roofs. The grandstand structure was built in 1909 as part of the Golden Gate Park Stadium.

History

The stables were a Works Progress Administration project completed in 1939. The Park Police Stables of 1936 stand nearby: a two-story concrete T-shaped building with a red tile roof and a copper cupola on the ridgeline, housing the San Francisco Police Department's mounted unit horses, renovated in 1995.
