Harbor Defense Museum

A museum in the nineteenth-century outwork known as the Caponier, inside the active Fort Hamilton Army base. It is described as New York City's only military museum and as one of about seventy US museums funded and operated by the Department of Defense.
History
Established in 1980, it holds Revolutionary War relics, uniforms, maps, Confederate mines and First World War anti-submarine netting. Admission is free and it is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, closed weekends and federal holidays. All adult visitors must show a state or federally issued photo ID to enter the installation through the 101st Street gate. The museum states that it may close on short notice and recommends calling ahead.
