Highgate Wood

Park · Highgate, England

Highgate Wood is entered from Muswell Hill Road, N10 3JN, and is run by the City of London Corporation, which describes it as 'a beautiful 70-acre ancient woodland in North London' and operates it as a charity, registered number 232986. Entry is free. The Corporation publishes no opening times and warns that the wood may close at short notice when winds of 37mph or above are forecast. The drinking fountain in the wood is Grade II listed, NHLE 1096149, listed 3 March 2003; the wood itself carries no NHLE designation.

History

The wood carries Green Flag and Green Heritage awards and has a café and terrace, a large playground and a sports field. Cycling is not permitted anywhere in it under its byelaws, in order to protect the ancient woodland. There is no car park; two blue-badge bays sit near the café, reached from Onslow Gate. The City of London Corporation manages the wood and the wood is in the London Borough of Haringey; the Corporation's own guidance names Highgate Underground station on the Northern line, 757 m from the fountain, and bus routes 43, 134 and 234.
