Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church

A Roman Catholic church, also known as the Church of the Holy Cross, established in 1912 as a national parish for early immigrants from Poland. It seats 800 and has three marble altars, stained-glass windows, Stations of the Cross, two sacristies and a tower belfry with a chime of bells. The parish runs a Polish School and CCD classes on weekends.
History
The parish was organized in 1908 as the Society of St. Joseph, and Reverend Adalbert Nawrocki was its first pastor when plans for the building were made in 1912. Its first parishioners had to visit their bishop 26 times before permission to erect a church was granted, at a cost of around US$75,000. The cornerstone was laid on June 22, 1913, the first mass was held on October 1, 1913, and the church was dedicated that November 30. Its pipe organ was built by George H. Ryder of Boston, Opus 63, in circa 1878 for the Bethel AME Church in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and rebuilt by Bozeman-Gibson of Deerfield, New Hampshire, in 1973.
