Hornsey Town Hall

R. H. Uren designed it in 1935 and won the RIBA Architecture Medal and the Gold Medal of the Worshipful Company of Tylers and Bricklayers for it. The list description records the design as modelled on Willem Dudok's town hall at Hilversum — Historic England's text spells the Dutch architect's name Dudock — and as an influence on other British town halls built subsequently. It is the centrepiece of a composition around the green, flanked by the former Gas Board and Electricity Board showrooms; the Electricity Board office and showroom is Grade II listed, NHLE 1358881. Interior decoration and furnishing were designed as part of the original conception and much survives: floor surfaces, wall cladding, columns, doors, light fittings, the imperial main stair with its openwork metal balustrade, the Council Chamber's original half-round seats and desks, and a galleried theatre with inlaid wood panelling to the walls. It was the headquarters of the Municipal Borough of Hornsey until 1965, when the London Borough of Haringey was formed, and restoration works began in October 2019 under a developer selected by Haringey Council, to a design by Donald Insall Associates. It stands in Haringey's Crouch End conservation area, designated 25 October 1974.
