The Queen's

John Cathles Hill (1858–1915), the builder and developer who laid out much of this part of north London, built it between 1899 and 1901: three storeys and an attic in red brick with extensive pale yellow limestone dressings, black granite to the ground-floor pilasters and base, and a lead-sheathed roof to the angle turret. The circular entrance lobby has a mosaic floor with a QH monogram beneath a wrought-iron screen inscribed THE QUEENS. Historic England records the interior as surviving 'largely intact': a central bar divided into four areas by ornate glazed wooden partitions with etched decoration and Art Nouveau stained glass, under a coffered ceiling with relief arabesques and mermaids. It stands in Haringey's Crouch End conservation area, designated 25 October 1974. Hill built The Salisbury in Harringay in 1898–9 as the other of the pair.
