Insula dell'Ara Coeli

A second-century Roman apartment block at the foot of the Capitoline, in the angle between the Ara Coeli staircase and the Vittoriano. it.wikipedia describes it as brick, resting on an opus-reticulatum wall probably of the first century built to consolidate the hill.
History
it.wikipedia records that in the Middle Ages the upper part of the insula was occupied by the church of San Biagio de Mercato, later replaced by Santa Rita da Cascia, and that the block above was dismantled in the 1930s for the Vittoriano works, which is when the insula itself was found. The Sovrintendenza Capitolina's page on Santa Rita independently confirms that the medieval San Biagio "de mercato" stood on that site.
