History
Per Wikipedia's article on Mohawk Trail State Forest, the forest spans the towns of Charlemont, Hawley, and Savoy, covers more than 7,700 acres, and was established in 1921 when the Commonwealth purchased the land to preserve its scenic beauty and historic associations. About 612 acres are classified as pre-settlement forest, with eastern hemlocks approaching 500 years old, and two Civilian Conservation Corps camps operated there in the 1930s.
