Mount Snow

Mount Snow was founded by Walter Schoenknecht, who conceived the project after visiting Mt. Pisgah on October 2, 1946; land was purchased around May 1953 from Reuben Snow's family for $15,000, and the initial $4 million project opened in late fall 1954 with chairlift and rope tow service, for the 1954-55 season, per New England Ski History's Mount Snow page. Mount Snow's North Face complex opened in 1959-60. On January 19, 1969, Mount Snow's summit lodge burned to the ground. Mount Snow's Sunbrook complex debuted in 1969-70. Mount Snow filed for bankruptcy in 1975 due to capital expenditures and rising energy costs. Sherburne Corporation purchased Mount Snow in 1977 for $4.5 million, and the resort was rolled into S-K-I Ltd. in 1984. Mount Snow absorbed the neighboring Carinthia ski area in 1986. Mount Snow installed a high-speed quad chairlift, the Yankee Clipper, in 1987. Mount Snow was absorbed by American Ski Company in 1996, and Peak Resorts acquired it in 2007. Vail Resorts acquired Mount Snow, along with the rest of Peak Resorts, on September 24, 2019, and has owned it since. In 2011 Mount Snow installed a high-speed six-pack (bubble) chairlift. On March 14, 2020, Mount Snow shut down early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Grand Summit Resort Hotel at Mount Snow's base area opened in 1997, per Wikipedia's "Mount Snow" article. Mount Snow's Carinthia base area lodge was rebuilt as part of an approximately $22 million capital project completed in 2018-2019. Mount Snow is owned and operated by Vail Resorts Management Company and is part of the Epic Pass network; as of the resort's own website, the 2026/27 season passes (Epic Pass, Epic Local Pass, and regional passes) are on sale, per Mount Snow's own website.
