Fondazione Museo della Shoah, Casina dei Vallati

The Sovrintendenza Capitolina's account of the building runs to its restoration of 1929 to 1932, to a project by Paolo Fidenzoni. The Casina was uncovered in the clearances begun in the 1920s to free the Teatro di Marcello, when substantial medieval fabric was found in the block being demolished and kept, after part of it had already collapsed. The corner toward the Portico d'Ottavia and via del Foro Piscario is Renaissance in character, with the original sixteenth-century marble portal and travertine window surrounds salvaged from another demolished palace and re-set here; the rest is thirteenth-century in character, with a first-floor loggia, a ground-floor portico and facing of tufelli and brick. The Sovrintendenza states that the building is named for the Vallati, who owned much property in this part of rione Sant'Angelo.
