History
The Mattei built the Isola between the 15th and 17th centuries on the remains of the theatre of Balbus. In the Middle Ages the site was the Castrum Aureum, nominally the property of the convent of Santa Maria Dominae Rosae, now Santa Caterina dei Funari. From the 13th century it held the houses of the Crescenzi, the Piermattei degli Albertoni, the Saragona, the Coccia, the Mellini, the de Ambrosinis and the Malabranca, and at the end of the 14th century it was broken up and sold.
