Museo Storico dell'Arma dei Carabinieri

The Carabinieri's own historical museum, at the western end of via Cola di Rienzo. The Arma dei Carabinieri states that the museum opens Tuesday to Sunday, 09.00 to 13.00, and closes on Mondays, 1 and 6 January, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, 1 May, 15 August, 1 November, 8 December, 25 and 26 December. Admission is free. The Arma describes a chronological and thematic route through 26 exhibition rooms, beginning with the Regie Patenti of 13 July 1814.

History

The display runs from the founding of the Carabinieri Reali through the Resistance and the Liberation. Italian Wikipedia credits the first published proposal for such a museum to Captain Vittorio Gorini, in the Rivista Militare in 1908, and names Carlo Petitti di Roreto as its founder; both statements rest on that article alone. The building sits on a square Roma Capitale records in two rioni: its toponymy register attributes piazza del Risorgimento to rione Prati on 8 May 1885 and then, in a limit variation of 1 March 1954, notes it R. PRATI E R. BORGO. The museum building itself is in Prati. The Arma gives its address as piazza del Risorgimento without a street number, and this guide does the same.
