Chiesa di San Benedetto
Historic site · Ostiense, Italy
A brick parish church of two orders on via del Gazometro, served by the Society of the Divine Word. An atrium on two piers carries the motto «Obsculta o fili praecepta magistri: ora et labora», with an oval window above bearing a cross, a fish, a chi-rho, a dove and a crozier, and the arms of Pius XII at the top. The interior has a single nave with a right-hand aisle and four chapels on the left.
History
Pius X decided in 1912 to build a church by the gasworks but died before the work began; Benedict XV started it, and the dedication to St Benedict remembers him. A hut was fitted out as a church in 1916, and only piers and roof stood at Benedict XV's death; the work was finished under Pius XI, who erected the parish on 3 June 1926 by the constitution Nostri pastoralis officii. The chapels hold a Sacred Heart mosaic by Armando Baldinelli, a Madonna and Child by Silvio Consadori of 1951, a St Joseph with the adolescent Christ by Luigi Filocamo of 1953, a San Benedetto by Ferruccio Ferrazzi at the high altar and a terracotta Via Crucis by Antonio Giuseppe Santagata. Plaques record John Paul II's visit of 14 February 1988 and the elevation to a cardinalatial deaconry on 28 June 1988.
