Stazione di Roma Porta San Paolo
Historic site · Ostiense, Italy
The Rome terminus of the Roma-Lido railway, with a wide booking hall decorated with marine-themed frescoes by Giulio Rosso. Its own article places it in the quartiere Ostiense, in the territory of Municipio VIII. The Polo museale dei trasporti stands next to it, in the old goods yard, at Via Bartolomeo Bossi 7.
History
Work began in 1919 to designs by Marcello Piacentini, as the twin of his terminus at Marina di Ostia, and the station was inaugurated on 10 August 1924 with the first train to the Lido. It came through the war undamaged. It was modernised from 9 September 1989 to 1996, with the terminus falling back to EUR Magliana while the work was done.
