Basilica di Santa Maria Regina degli Apostoli alla Montagnola

Historic site · Ostiense, Italy

A church on via Antonino Pio run by the Societa San Paolo, on a central plan under a large dome, Roman-Baroque in inspiration, with Marian frescoes by Antonio Giuseppe Santagata. It carries the title of minor basilica, conferred in 1984.

History

Don Giacomo Alberione, founder of the Famiglia Paolina, had wanted a shrine to Mary Queen of Apostles, and the decision to build was taken in 1943 after a bombing on the site caused no casualties. The church was built after the war to a design by Leone Favini and finished in 1954. It has held a cardinalatial title since 1965 and became a parish in 1976 by will of Paul VI. It holds the remains of Don Alberione, of Tecla Merlo and of Giuseppe Timoteo Giaccardo, and the funeral of the exorcist Gabriele Amorth was held here on 19 September 2016.
