Palazzo Alicorni

Italian Wikipedia records that the Alicorni were an Albanian family who had fled the Ottoman advance under Pius II, and that the palace was demolished in 1931 in the course of defining the boundaries of the new Vatican City State. That is a fact about how a border was made physical on the ground; it is not a statement of where the border runs, and this guide does not make one. Rebuilt in 1938, the palace now faces the Palazzo del Commendatore, with via Scossacavalli separating it from Palazzo dei Penitenzieri and via dell'Ospedale on its other side — a street named for the Ospedale di San Carlo, which was destroyed.
