Palazzo Venezia

VIVE, the state institute that runs the palazzo, describes it as a fifteenth-century residence of popes, cardinals and ambassadors, its facades and much of its detail going back to its founder and first occupant Cardinal Pietro Barbo, who became Paul II from 1464 to 1471. Paul III Farnese, from 1534 to 1549, was among later papal residents, and Erasmus and Charles V among recorded guests. VIVE's site carries a standing notice that the Sale Storiche are closed to the public for restoration; the notice gives 2026 as its horizon, so check before travelling.
