Piazza di Monte Citorio

Roma Capitale records that the square stands on an artificial rise which some sources attribute to the accumulated rubble of a Roman monument, and that the origin of the name is uncertain. It is variously derived from Citatorius or Saeptorius — citizens having been summoned to the Saepta to elect magistrates since the time of Servius Tullius — or from mons acceptorius, or from a corruption of Monte di Toro.
