Porta Alchemica (Porta Magica)

Historic site · Esquilino, Italy

A stone doorway carved with alchemical inscriptions, standing in the garden of piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and flanked by two statues of the Egyptian god Bes.

History

It was built between 1655 and 1681 by Massimiliano Savelli Palombara, marchese di Pietraforte, who lived from 1614 to 1685, in the grounds of his villa Palombara on the Esquiline, and re-erected in the present garden. The villa had five gates and this is the one that survives; an inscription on the lost gate opposite carried the date 1680.
