Rainham Hall

The Grade II listing was made on 7 January 1955 as list entry 1358506. Captain John Harle, a shipping merchant, built the house in 1729, and the Trust records over 50 inhabitants across its history. It reopened after a £2.5 million conservation project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Veolia North Thames Trust and Biffa Award. Changing exhibitions cover the 1700s, the Victorian era, the post-war years and the 1960s over three floors, with a Tag Trail Challenge for children; the restored stable block and coach house set out the history of the house, and there is a second-hand bookshop, a café, a natural play area with a mud kitchen and bug hotels, and a community garden. The Hall was used as a film location for a UK film of Sense and Sensibility in August 2025, with an exhibition about the filming running from 26 September to 19 December 2026. The Trust states that the Hall is not wheelchair accessible; there are accessible toilets and a lift in the stable block, and step-free access to the garden from Wennington Road or The Broadway.
