Fay Park

A garden of about a third of an acre at Leavenworth and Chestnut Streets, open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Three terraces climb the hillside for half a city block, linked by stairs and ramps, with stone balustrades and retaining walls, ornamental planting beds and boxwood hedges, two latticed wooden gazebos, and an overlook at the top with a view of San Francisco Bay.
History
The Fay family built the first house on the site in 1869 and the present house in 1912. Brigadier General Paul Berrigan commissioned the landscape architect Thomas Church to design the garden in 1957. The garden and the house came to the city by bequest from his wife, Mary Fay Berrigan; the city accepted the property on the general's death in 1998 and opened the garden to the public in 2006. The house is not open to the public.
