Roma Capitale's tourism portal gives the history. The church was designed by Carlo Maderno and built between 1608 and 1620, first as a chapel dedicated to St Paul for the Discalced Carmelites. Its present title comes from the Catholic army's victory over the Bohemians at the battle of the White Mountain near Prague on 8 November 1620; the miraculous image was carried into the church on 8 May 1622. The travertine façade went up in 1626 to Giovan Battista Soria's design, at the expense of Cardinal Scipione Borghese, in exchange for the Sleeping Hermaphrodite found in 1608 during the digging of the church's foundations. Inside it is a Latin cross with a single nave, a barrel vault and three chapels a side; the vault and dome were painted by Giandomenico Cerrini and the apse by Luigi Serra, and there are works by Guercino, Nicolas Lorrain and Domenichino.

The Cornaro Chapel was commissioned from Gian Lorenzo Bernini by the family of Cardinal Federico Cornaro. The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa of Ávila is in marble and gilt bronze and was executed between 1647 and 1652; members of the Cornaro family watch the scene from what read as theatre boxes. The Carmelite province's site carries a notice dated 22 October 2021 announcing the inauguration of the Cornaro Chapel after its restoration, which the same page attributes to the Soprintendenza Speciale di Roma.

The Discalced Carmelite province of central Italy, whose community serves the church, publishes these hours: the church open 6.45–12.00 and 16.00–19.00, and on Sundays 9.00–12.00 and 16.00–18.00. Visiting hours are given separately as 8.00–12.00 and 16.00–18.00 on weekdays and 9.00–12.00 and 16.00–18.00 on Sundays. Mass is at 7.00 Monday to Saturday and 10.30 on Sundays and holy days of obligation; Eucharistic adoration is on Tuesdays 18.00–19.00 and Thursdays 18.30–19.00. That page is cited here for the routing and for nothing else: its opening history describes a different church of the same name, in Mantua, and no history has been taken from it.
