History

General Order 133 set aside a part of the reservation at the Presidio, including the post cemetery on it, to be known as the San Francisco National Cemetery. The first known American burial there was in 1854, and the ground passed under the Quartermaster General in 1884. The final expansion came in 1932, when the cemetery reached its present size of 28.34 acres.
