Speedway Meadow

Park · Golden Gate Park, California

A long meadow in the western half of the park, on the line of the old speed road. Little Speedway Meadow, the western remnant of the same road, lies between Chain of Lakes Drive and the Polo Field.

History

A speed road was completed in 1894 as a place to race horses; it was a straight road nine-tenths of a mile long. The site was used as a camp for a while after the 1906 earthquake, after which it was returned to park use as a meadow. The rest of the road was removed with the construction of the Polo Field in 1906.
