Tompkins Square Park
Park · East Village, New York
A 10.5-acre park named for U.S. Vice President Daniel D. Tompkins, opened in 1834. It's home to the "Hare Krishna Tree," an elm associated with the 1966 founding of the Krishna movement in the U.S., and was the site of the August 1988 riot that became a flashpoint in the neighborhood's gentrification battles.
