Piazza del Quirinale

Historic site · Trevi, Italy

The square in front of the presidential palace, lying between Via del Quirinale and Via XXIV Maggio. The Italian Wikipedia article, citing Sergio Delli, Le strade di Roma, 3rd ed., Newton Compton, 1988, p. 809, places it nei rioni I Monti e II Trevi: it is shared between Monti and Trevi, and neither rione holds all of it.

History

From the Middle Ages and still into the 19th century the square was known as Piazza di Monte Cavallo. Roma Capitale records that the arrangement of the square was commissioned in 1586 by Sixtus V from Domenico Fontana, who restored the Dioscuri group and moved the sculptures towards the centre of the square, facing the Strada Pia.

The Fontana dei Dioscuri and the obelisk set between the statues in 1786 stand in the square and are in Trevi; Roma Capitale states Rione: Trevi for the fountain.
