Valle Giulia
Historic site · Pinciano, Italy
A small valley between Villa Borghese and the Parioli hill, still holding Villa Giulia, and the address of a cluster of foreign research institutes. Its present layout comes largely from the 1911 national exposition, for which Cesare Bazzani's Galleria Nazionale was built; from 1911 onward, and through the decades that followed, foreign countries sited their institutes here. Villa Elia, on via di San Valentino, is the seat of the embassy of Portugal to the Holy See.
History
On the slopes facing the valley is the faculty of architecture that La Sapienza inaugurated in 1920 and that is still there. On 1 March 1968 the area around the faculty was the scene of serious clashes between students and police, which came to be called the battle of Valle Giulia and about which Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote Il PCI ai giovani!.
