Villa Balestra

A public municipal garden of 15,000 square metres owned by the Comune di Roma, on the top of Monte San Valentino, the tufa hill above viale Tiziano. Its own article notes that although the garden occupies a spur of the Parioli hills it belongs to the quartiere Pinciano, as does via Bartolomeo Ammannati, by which it is reached.

History

It occupies a small part of the grounds of Villa Poggio, built by the Bolognese cardinal Giovanni Poggio, treasurer of the Apostolic Camera under Paul III and nuncio in Spain and Germany. An encyclopaedia of 1834 still calls it the villa Poggi outside Porta del Popolo, where cardinals and ambassadors halted when making their public entry into Rome. Cavaliere Giuseppe Balestra bought it in 1880 and returned the farmed part to vineyard. The estate was broken up from 1910 and part of it was built over in 1928.
