Villa Poniatowski

The second seat of the Museo Nazionale Etrusco, holding Etrusco-Italic material from Latium vetus and Umbria, including parts of the grave goods of the Barberini and Bernardini tombs of Palestrina and remains of the temple of Mater Matuta at Satricum. No separate opening times are published for it.

History

Cardinal Pierdonato Cesi bought the land around 1570 and Montaigne described the place in 1581; a Venturini engraving of 1683 shows it as Borromeo property. It passed from the Cesi to the Sinibaldi in 1702, to the Candelori in 1798, and then to Prince Stanislaw Poniatowski, who had Giuseppe Valadier rebuild the sixteenth-century casino and the terraced Italian garden. It was badly damaged in the fighting of 1849 between Garibaldini and French troops, and the Riganti family put a tannery in the garden after 1870. The Italian state bought it in 1988, recovery works were carried out in 1998 for the 2000 Jubilee, and it was inaugurated as a museum seat in 2012.
