VIVE, the Ministry of Culture institute that runs the complex, states that it was conceived in January 1878, in the days after the death of Italy's first king, and inaugurated in 1911; VIVE's history gives Giuseppe Sacconi as its architect, building from 1885 to 1905. it.wikipedia's infobox gives the inauguration as 4 June 1911, a construction period of 1885-1935, and a height of 81 metres.
History
VIVE's own history of the monument runs from a decision of the Italian government after the king's death in 1878, through Vittorio Emanuele III's pressure on the site so that it could open in 1911, the fiftieth anniversary of unification, and the burial of the Unknown Soldier that turned it into a shrine. VIVE records that in the last years of the Second World War its basements sheltered Roman civilians, that after the war it was closed to the public and tried for "offesa estetica", and that it was relaunched under President Ciampi. It stands on piazza Venezia; no source states which rione that square belongs to, so none is stated for it.
