Washington Square Park
Park · Greenwich Village, New York
A 9.75-acre park whose 77-foot marble arch — erected 1892, designed by Stanford White, modeled on Paris's Arc de Triomphe — commemorates the centennial of George Washington's inauguration. The site was a potter's field from 1797 to 1825, and more than 20,000 burials are believed to remain beneath it.
