Winfield Reformed Church

Historic site · Woodside, New York

A Protestant church of the Reformed Church in America, founded in 1880. Its own Wikipedia article calls it "the oldest Taiwanese church established in North America"; the article on Woodside says it "began in 1880 as a Dutch Calvinist church and in 1969 became the first Taiwanese congregation in America."

History

The church was originally located on Queens Boulevard and moved to its present location in 1910; the current building was put up in 1914. Wikipedia describes a historically Dutch-speaking and mainly white congregation until a wave of Taiwanese immigrants arrived in the 1960s, after which preaching continued in both English and Taiwanese. It carries the name of Winfield, an adjacent area that the same encyclopedia says was largely incorporated into the post office serving Woodside and so lost much of its identity distinct from Woodside.
