Catacombe di Domitilla

A catacomb on the ancient via Ardeatina, dug in the praedium Domitillae, the estate of Flavia Domitilla, a relative of Flavius Clemens, consul in 95. Its titular martyrs are Nereus and Achilleus, probably victims of the persecution of 304, buried in a large apsed basilica of the time of Pope Siricius, who reigned from 384 to 399, preceded by a narthex and divided into three aisles by columns on reused capitals. The complex also holds the ipogeo dei Flavi, begun as a private pagan hypogeum at the end of the second century and taking Christian burials through the third; the cubicolo di Veneranda; the arcosolium of the Apostoli Piccoli; and the cubicolo of the fossor Diogenes. Christian and pagan burials coexist here. Open Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, with Tuesday as the weekly rest day; its published dates for an annual closure have not been updated, so none are given here.
