Forte Ardeatino

One of the fifteen forts built round Rome between 1877 and 1891, of the Prussian type and part of the Campo trincerato di Roma. It was built between 1879 and 1882 over 11.2 hectares at the fourth kilometre of via Ardeatina, from which it takes its name. Its own article places it in the quartiere Q. XX Ardeatino, in the territory of Municipio Roma VIII. In May 2006, after restoration work, the park outside the fort was opened to the public; the interior of the fort is still not accessible.
History
From the 1920s the fort served as a military commissariat and a health-service store. It was decommissioned in 1961 and assigned in concession to the Ente Assistenza Cancerosi Poveri, a plan that came to nothing. It was handed to the Comune di Roma in 1982, with an expropriation never completed, and is now owned by Roma Capitale.
