Basilica di Santa Maria in Montesanto (Chiesa degli Artisti)
Historic site · Campo Marzio, Italy
The northern of the two churches facing the entrance of piazza del Popolo, standing between via del Corso and via del Babuino, and known as the Chiesa degli Artisti.
History
The basilica's own account dates the start of construction to 1662 under Alexander VII, on the site of a small church belonging to the Carmelites of the province of Monte Santo in Sicily; after an interruption the work resumed in 1673 under Carlo Fontana with Bernini supervising, and the interior decoration was finished in 1679. It became the Chiesa degli Artisti in 1953, when Monsignor Ennio Francia made it the seat of the Messa degli Artisti. Roma Capitale records the dodecagonal dome that distinguishes it from its twin.
