Borgo Pio

Historic site · Borgo, Italy

One of the three streets Pius IV laid out from 1565, running from via di Porta Castello to via di Porta Angelica. It is also called borgo Sant'Anna.

History

Italian Wikipedia, citing Rendina and Paradisi, records that the street was established by Pius IV's bull «Erectionis civitatis Piae prope arcem Sancti Angeli» of 5 December 1565, and that construction continued under Gregory XIII, attested by an epigraph dated anno VIII MDLXXX. Borgo Pio, Borgo Vittorio and Borgo Angelico were laid out together from 1565 as the Civitas Pia: Borgo Vittorio takes its name from the victory at Lepanto, Borgo Angelico from Angelo, Pius IV's baptismal name.
