Chiesa di San Pietro in Borgo
Historic site · Borgo, Italy
A medieval oratory on piazza del Sant'Uffizio, by Porta Cavalleggeri, restored as an oratory in 1923 within the Sant'Uffizio complex. Italian Wikipedia records fifteenth-century frescoes, a sixteenth-century Madonna col Bambino, and the burial of cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani.
History
Italian Wikipedia describes the oratory as standing on Italian soil subject to extraterritoriality in favour of the Holy See; the Holy See's own enumeration names the Palazzo del Sant'Offizio «ed adiacenze» and does not itemise the oratory. On the building itself the same article gives an eleventh-century origin, records the church also as San Salvatore de ossibus and in terrione, and lists it among the Vatican basilica's dependencies in papal bulls of 1053, 1158 and 1186; the Schola Francorum hospice adjoined it. It was restored under Nicholas V, then abandoned and partly destroyed for the building of the Palazzo del Sant'Uffizio.
